If you’re looking to play your favorite music from your ipod or iphone on your Car radio then you have a few options. Some cars have an auxilliary input for you to plug your mp3 player directly in. You can also get a Cassette adapter but who has cassettes in their cars today? Your final option is an FM transmitter.
With an FM transmitter you can broadcast your mp3 players songs over any FM frequency and then tune your car radio to the same frequency. All you have to do is find an FM frequency that is not populated by a local radio station. In essence you have created your own radio station with your tracks!
It is only recently that FM transmitters have been made legal for personal use in our cars. There a two standard types. You get fm transmitters that are designed for certain MP3 players like apple Ipods or the Sandisk Sansa Range. Another option are universal fm transmitters. Universal transmitters plug into your headphone socket so it will work with any MP3 player available today.
Once you’ve tried an FM transmitter in your car you’ll never want to be without one.
Firstly, I would like to mention that the quality of the transmission from these devices is highly dependent on the availability of empty FM frequencies. It will struggle to broadcast on a frequency that is already being used by a local radio station. The best frequencies are the ones that only have static when tuned into your stereo. However, you will find that 50 miles down the road you may need to change to another frequency as it is being used. So if you travel long distances then you might want to choose an FM transmitter that has presets. This means you would be able to save a few different frequencies and quickly change to another one. This is especially useful if your commute is through the same areas.
Most will also allow you to change to mono broadcast which offers better signal but you will lose out on stereo obviously.
Some transmitters will use the power from your ipod. These are just fine if you are taking small trips but if you commute a lot you will want one that plugs into your cigarette lighter socket. The added bonus of these transmitters is that will also charge your ipod or mp3 player.
